Holy Cross has been richly blessed by the various active organizations serving our parish family and the community by helping our members grow spiritually, physically, emotionally and socially.

Opportunities include the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, ministry to inner-city residents, social activities, scouting programs, youth gatherings, retreats, sporting events, health screenings and an annual member-produced melodrama.

Athletic Activities

Athletic activities include a wide variety of activities in the Christian Day School and for children and adults of the parish. Currently, for adults, there are men’s and co-ed softball teams active during the spring and summer months. Holy Cross periodically arranges access with local gym facilities to provide basketball, volleyball and other indoor activities during the winter. For more information, watch the Sunday bulletin.

Banner Committee

The Banner Committee creates the beautiful worship banners, which serve as visual messages and proclamations throughout the church year, providing seasonal and liturgical themes to enhance the worship experience. The original compositions are designed by a professional artist/art instructor and created by the committee under direction. If you have an interest in helping with any of these beautiful creations (cutting, pasting, sewing, etc.) we'd be happy to have you.

Chancel Guild

The Chancel Guild is responsible for the preparation and maintenance of the altar and chancel of the church for divine services and special occasions. They coordinate the seasonal floral arrangements that beautify the sanctuary, as well as provide the communion arrangements each week. Volunteers with helping hands are always welcome.

Helping Hands

Helping Hands organizes and delivers meals to our members on a one-time basis that are temporarily "in need", such as during or after hospitalizations, at the birth of a child, etc. The members work in teams of four to prepare and make the deliveries.

Lutheran Women's Missionary League (LWML)

The Lutheran Women's Missionary League (LWML) is a Synod-wide women's organization, which provides support to our missionary efforts through local activities of the women of the parish. LWML meetings are held quarterly at Holy Cross in the fellowship hall, and additional opportunities occur throughout the year for circuit and other special meetings with women from other LCMS churches. LWML also operates the bookstore. LWML Bible study is held in the morning of the second Wednesday of each month.

Music Activities

Music Activities are varied and numerous in our parish, all with the focus of bringing this gift to our worship services and help lead the parish in its musical expressions to our Lord. For more information or to make your talents known, please call or email the church office.

Men's Bible Study & Activities

Men's Bible study activities include breakfast meetings each Tuesday morning at 6:15 am in the fellowship hall, a weekly evening Bible study, and an annual retreat. During the weekly breakfast meetings the men take turns preparing breakfast for the group and spend time in Bible study. No advance reservation is required. The Weekly Evening Bible Study rotates the location among participants.

The Annual Men's Retreat is held one weekend each spring, which allows the men to "get away" from daily life distractions and join each other in spiritual growth and fellowship.

Handbell Choir

The handbell choir plays for church services and additional concerts throughout the year. Members of the choir must be high-school age or older, but do not need to have previous experience or be able to read music. We will teach you!

There is currently one handbell choir which meets on Thursday nights from 6 to 7pm in the sanctuary. We would love to expand our ministry with additional choirs!

Instrumentalists

Instrumentalists of all vanities are always needed for ensembles, solos, and accompaniments.

Prayer Chain

Prayer Chain activities pass along prayer requests from members of the church so that together we can bring our specific needs and concerns to God. The chain typically involves most Holy Cross families. We pass requests along an email and telephone-tree system. We have seen the Lord respond in remarkable ways!

Quilters Group

The Quilters group meets each Monday morning at the church to use their sewing talents and enjoy fellowship. Typical projects include quilting by special request and patchwork quilts for donation. Revenues the quilters receive are donated periodically to needed causes of the parish.

Singles Alive in the Lord

Singles Alive in the Lord is a greater Kansas City Lutheran singles group providing opportunity for spiritual growth through Bible study and social activities. Any single adult (never married and those who are widowed or divorced) is welcome. Current ages range from 21 to 70. Bible studies and social events rotate among the Missouri Synod Lutheran churches throughout the city (primarily the Missouri side).

Sunday School

Bible study and Sunday school classes are offered for adults and children starting at age 3. The Sunday School hour is from 9:30-10:30 on Sunday mornings. Mid-week classes and confirmation instruction for grades 5-8 is also offered. Adult confirmation and new member orientation classes are held several times through out the year. Vacation Bible School is held each summer.

The Voice publication

The Voice publication is our monthly newsletter to keep all members advised of the mission and focus of the parish, as well as up-coming events, and news about parish members. Please advise the church office, 816-452-9113, regarding any material or information that may be appropriate for inclusion. Also feel free to contact the church office for more information on any items found in the Voice. Volunteers are always welcome to help assemble the Voice mailings each month.

Vacation Bible School

Vacation Bible School is offered each summer in late June, July or early August. It is designed for members of all ages. Details and enrollment forms are available each spring in the monthly Voice publication and the Sunday bulletin. Non-member children are particularly encouraged to attend and members are strongly urged to invite their non-churched friends.

Widows Group

The Widow's group meets periodically at the church. This group provides an opportunity for widows, both recent and not, to discuss mutual concerns and also to enjoy fellowship while providing needed services to the parish facilities.
