Boards and CommitteesThe spiritual shepherds and guides of the parish are the Pastors. They are the stewards of the mysteries of God (1 Corinthians 4:1) bringing the word of God to the parish family through preaching, teaching and administering the sacraments of Holy Baptism and Holy Communion. They shepherd the souls of our parish family also through visitation and counseling. It is their desire to strengthen our confidence in God's grace and forgiveness and to rely upon the mercy of Christ always. Holy Cross is administratively governed by the Constitution and By-Laws under the direction of duly elected officers, including an executive director and administrative boards. Voting members are defined and administered according to the Constitution and By-Laws. Transfers, releases, membership changes and discipline are outlined in the Articles. Regular voters' meetings are scheduled throughout the year, where church business is conducted, along with nominations, election and installation of the various governing positions, as needed. Please contact the church office for more information or if you wish to join a board or committee. For full descriptions, read on. Administrative BoardsAdministrative Boards do the work of the parish, whether it be establishing direction, determining individual tasks or accomplishing needed activities. Each board is provided its own operating budget and is expected to carry out its mission within these parameters. As the need for decisions arise, the appropriate board has responsibility to determine a recommended course of action and to present its recommendations to the voters for decision. Board of AssimilationThe Board of Assimilation facilitates the integration of all new members into the parish family. This includes orientation of the new members to the various spiritual and temporal activities available within Holy Cross, periodic receptions for new member introductions to the parish and development of programs to acquaint new and existing members with similar interests and backgrounds. Board of Christian EducationThe Board of Christian Education provides the necessary means and facilities to accomplish all other educational programs, which includes such activities as Sunday School, Weekday School, Vacation Bible School, and various Bible classes. This board recruits and trains lay teachers. Board of EvangelismThe Board of Evangelism maintains an on-going follow-up program for visitors, including friendship bread deliveries to first-time visitors, promotes spreading of the Gospel by all members, establishes evangelism programs and encourages a climate of prayer in church and individual homes toward the goal of bringing the Gospel to all people. Fishermen call upon visitors to the parish, and the Living for Tomorrow volunteers conduct follow-up contact with referrals from television ministry of the Synod. Board of Church PropertiesThe Board of Church Properties cares for the physical facilities of the parish. This encompasses all property owned by the church for worship, education and related activities. Contracted work is administered by this board, along with organization of seasonal "work days" for the parish to clean, maintain and/or build facilities to carry out the mission of the parish. Board of EldersThe Board of Elders is responsible for spiritual direction and discipline within the church body. The individual elders provide counseling and discipleship to members of the church and continually review the membership and its various spiritual needs, both personal and parish-wide. Each elder is assigned to a geographical area and the members within. Members are encouraged to call their elder with any concerns of a personal or spiritual nature, The Board of Elders is also the primary interaction point of the pastors regarding their performance and compensation. Board of Parish FellowshipThe Board of Parish Fellowship plans and implements the various large parish gatherings that occur throughout the year. These include both the regularly scheduled meetings of voters as well as intermittent or special meetings necessary to conduct business or promote parish fellowship. Board of Public RelationsThe Board of Public Relations presents to the pubic the Christian image and a record of activities of the parish and keeps the parish informed of developments within the community. Board of Social MinistryThe Board of Social Ministry promotes opportunities for social ministry among members of the parish (both at the church location and other individual and community locations), recognizing needs and recommending and implementing both physical and spiritual services. Initiatives of this board include the Soup, Sandwich and Soul lunch provided periodically at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 6th and Benton, Kansas City, Missouri; Easter and Thanksgiving baskets distributed to Holy Cross home-bound members; and the monthly food drive each first Sunday of the month to collect non-perishable food items for the Metropolitan Lutheran Ministries (MLM) and Good Shepherd food pantries. Board of StewardshipThe Board of Stewardship establishes means and methods to determine the spiritual gifts of the parish members, fosters their offering of these gifts to the parish and coordinates time and talent of these members in the conduct of parish business. Time and talent coordination includes both monetary and service stewardship. Board of Youth MinistryThe Board of Youth Ministry develops and promotes opportunities for youth and young adult members that allow for growth in spiritual relationships with Christ. The board fosters an environment of service, and social and spiritual activities for young people during their immediate post-confirmation ages. Executive BoardThe Executive Board consists of the executive director and several support positions. The executive director conducts all parish meetings, carries out or directs parish business and operations, has authority to sign legal documents when necessary and generally coordinates the conduct of the business of the parish. One or more of the four assistant executive directors aid the executive director in these tasks. They serve as his substitute during absences. The remaining officers of the executive board include secretary and treasurer. All of these officers serve voluntarily. Parish Planning Council (PPC)The Parish Planning Council (PPC) is comprised of the executive board, the directors of the various administrative boards, the pastors and the day school principal. The PPC meets periodically to coordinate the business of the parish and provide direction among the various boards. PPC is not primarily a decision-making body, but rather performs the function of planning, coordinating and liaison throughout the church. |
